Ram boys finish soccer season at state tournament

The Ram boys soccer season ended the same way the 2019 season ended – with a loss in the first round of the state tournament to Iowa City Regina. The 2019 Rams lost in overtime. The 2021 Rams lost 3-0 in regulation play. The game was played June 1 at Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines.

The win in the Class 1A Substate 7 title game was a hard-fought battle against West Central Valley/Nodaway Valley May 26. The 2-1 Ram victory came after two overtimes and six penalty kicks.

GC freshman Gesser Aguilar scored for the Rams with 23:51 remaining in the first half but WCV/NV freshman Kamron Kunkle tied it with a goal in the second half with 12:27 left. The score was 1-1 at the end of regulation.

WCV/NV fired what seemed to be the winning score with 5:04 left in the second OT, but the play was blown dead for a violation by the Wildcats. A five-person round of penalty kicks ensued with each team making three, before the contest finally ended in “sudden victory” with the Wildcats missing their sixth kick, and senior Alex Roberts making the game winner for Greene County.

The Rams finished the season 14-7. Regina’s win put that team at 12-7 on the season.  ~ The Scranton Journal, contributor
